Christianity is a life of
the spirit because the Holy Spirit is the director and the controller. Before
Jesus Christ left His disciples, He promised He would send the Holy Spirit, and
He will direct them into all truth when He comes.
This means that
Christians cannot live successfully without the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit
has always been there with the Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ before creation
began (See Genesis 1:1-3).
Every Christian must
understand that the moment He confesses the Lordship and believes in the
salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ, He is not at liberty to live anyhow. Paul
wrote to the Church in Corinth, "1 Corinthians 10:23 All things
are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for
me, but all things edify not." so we are
supposed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. We cannot live like the
unbelievers and expect them to conform to the image of Christ.
Our life must be a source
of light for them. The unbelievers must see the nature of Christ in us. Paul
advised the Christians to imitate him as he has imitated Christ
Jesus. So a believer can imitate his shepherd if the shepherd's life
conforms to the image of Christ (See 1 Corinthians 11:1).
You
cannot follow a shepherd blindly. Analyze the spiritual life of the shepherd
carefully before you follow his steps. You will live in bondage if you follow
someone because he calls himself a leader. You automatically become a blind
follower.
From the book of
Galatians, Paul is commanding us to walk in the Spirit because the flesh wages
war against the Spirit. The Holy Spirit craves to direct our path but the
desires of the flesh limit the voice and the decisions of the Holy Spirit in
our life.
This is one method you can use to enable you to know the
difference between the Holy Spirit and our spirit. Check the first letter of
the word "spirit" in the King James version of the
Holy Bible. If the first letter "Spirit" starts
with a capital letter, then the translator talks about the Holy Spirit. If the
first letter "spirit" begins with a small letter,
the translator is talking about the Human spirit.
You can get my book entitled "How to Walk and Live in the Spirit for a better
understanding of the Holy Spirit and the Human Spirit." I use the King
James version of the Holy Bible. This scripture best explains the concept.
Romans 8:16 The
Spirit [Holy Spirit] itself beareth witness with our
spirit [Human spirit], that we are the children of God:
Paul is saying that there
is an unseen battle between the Holy Spirit and the flesh, and for us to
overcome the desires of the flesh, we must walk and live in the Spirit. There
are five questions we must ask ourselves.
1. The first question is,
what are the desires of the flesh?
2. The second
question is, what are the desires of the Holy Spirit?
3. The third
question is, why is the flesh combating the leadership of the Holy Spirit?
4. The fourth
question is, why is the Holy Spirit in connection with our spirit refusing to
submit to the cravings of the flesh?
5. The fifth question is,
how do we walk in the Spirit?
I will briefly answer the
questions so you can get solutions to these important questions. Get my
book, "How to Walk and Live in the Spirit." We find the
answer to the first question in the word of God. Meditate carefully.
Galatians 5:19 Now the
works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Galatians 5:20 Idolatry,
witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Galatians
5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the
which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which
do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
We find the answer to the
second question in the word of God. Meditate carefully.
Galatians 5:22 But the
fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith,
Galatians 5:23 Meekness,
temperance: against such there is no law.
Galatians 5:24 And they
that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
We find the answer to the
third and in the word of God. Meditate carefully.
Romans 8:10 And if Christ
be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of
righteousness.
Romans 8:11 But if the
Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised
up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit
that dwelleth in you.
Romans 8:12 Therefore,
brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
You can also meditate on
the book of Romans, chapter six, for a better understanding.
We find the answer to the
fifth question in the word of God. Meditate carefully.
John 6:63 It is the
spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the
words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Romans 12:2 And be
not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the
renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and
perfect, will of God.
