Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Ephesians 6:2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
Ephesians 6:3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
We can see from God's Word that He commands children to obey their
parents in the Lord, not outside the Lord. As children, we must obey our
parents who direct us in the ways of God, not the ways of the devil. If we obey
our parents in the Lord, God will prolong our lives, and it shall be well with
us. This is a promise attached to the command.
Some parents want their children to obey them outside the will of
God. This is not the command of God because obeying your parents outside the
will of God makes you disobedient in the sight of God and obedient to the
devil. Some parents advise their children to
engage in sinful acts. They tell their children to play the role of harlotry
because of poverty.
Some parents advise their children hastily and expect their
children to obey them. This is against the Law of God because the scriptures
said children should only obey their parents in the Lord, not outside the Lord.
Suppose your parents' advice challenges the Word of God. In that case, you are free
to reject their advice because God cannot disapprove of His Word.
Sin means you transgress against the Word. If you obey your
parents and disobey the Word of God, you have allowed the devil to manipulate
you. I am not teaching you to disobey your parents.
The Word of God must be the criteria for your obedience. If your
parents' advice opposes the Word of God, tell them respectfully that it is
against the Word of God. No one is wiser than God; your
parents may have an experience you do not have. Some of their advice may help
you but make sure it is consistent and compatible with the Word.
Let your inner peace guide you. Use the gift of discernment when an older adult advises you. Most of the time, the Holy Spirit will
confirm their advice to you within your
heart. Sometimes you will feel uncomfortable with the advice they give
you.
This is a sign of alertness because the Holy Spirit is the
ultimate guide to all Christians. Sometimes you have to pray before you embark
on any advice someone has given you because their wisdom is limited.
The Word of God further states that fathers should not provoke
their children to wrath but train them in the ways of God. Fathers are the head
of the family, and God has assigned them to
lead the family in fear of God, not in fear of man.
If your parents do not train you to fear God but to fear them,
they become enemies in the sight of God. This will limit the child from advancing into his purpose because the fear of
man brings a snare (See Proverbs 29:25).
- Don’t allow the decision of your parents to overrule the Word of God.
- Don’t allow the decisions of your neighbors to overrule the Word of God
- Don’t allow the decisions of your guardians to overrule the Word of God.
- Don’t allow your boss's decisions to overrule the Word of God.
- Don’t allow the decisions of your teacher to overrule the Word of God.
- Don’t allow your leaders' decisions to overrule the Word of God.
- Don’t allow the decision of anybody to overrule the Word of God.
Stay with the Word. Honor all men but give all the glory to the Highest God (Jesus Christ).
DIVINE KEY: Let all your decisions agree with the Word before you take an action
