The Bible is clear
that God wants His people to renew their strength continually.
But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they
will walk and not be faint
Isaiah 40:31 (NIV).
It is a fact of
life that human beings have limited strength and often become weak after
engaging in different activities. In the spirit realm, it is very easy to
suffer from burnout and fatigue after a saint has been walking with the Lord
for a while.
It is, therefore,
necessary for believers to find out how they can renew their strength so they
can keep going in the face of adversity, pain, trials, temptations, suffering
and the troubles of this life.
In the anchor Scripture
quoted above, it is clear that humanity is frail and cannot be self-sufficient
in terms of strength. The Lord knows this and has made provisions for those who
trust in Him to enjoy the benefit of divine strength. Those who hope in the
Lord, says Isaiah, shall renew their strength like eagles. Hope is one of the
three virtues that the word of God says will remain for all eternity. The
others are faith and love.
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the
greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians
13:13 (NKJV)
Hope holds a lot
of significance before God and to His dearly beloved children. It provides mental
and spiritual security against depression, despair, and giving up. It is a
powerful weapon God has placed in the hands of His children to empower them to
overcome the evil one and his many devices, some of which target the mind and are
aimed at breaking people’s will and weakening them.
The metaphor of an
eagle in the verse is significant because eagles are known to renew their beaks
and feathers once they get old and worn out. They go to secluded places where
they hit their old beaks against rocks until they come off.
They also go
through a painful process of removing all their feathers to create room for the
growth of new ones. After a short time of recovery, they glow in youthfulness
and vitality. They literally get a new lease of life and can live another 70
years after that experience. The Lord wants this to be the story of all
disciples of Jesus Christ. The psalmist was well aware of this fact as he demonstrates
in one of his psalms.
Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth
is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalm 103:5 (NKJV)
That is how God
intends divine strength to work in us. He wants us to have lots of staying
power so we can walk with Him till our last day on the earth. We can accomplish
great tasks in life if we willingly submit to the power and wisdom of God. In
fact, Jesus promises that nothing shall be impossible for us if we have faith
in Him.
…all things are possible too him who believes.
Mark 9.23b (NKJV)
The only reason many
believers are weak, tired, stuttering and backsliding are because they have
failed to plug into God's power source. We must know that we cannot keep going
in the life of faith without spiritual resources that are only available in
God.
Meditating on the
word continually, unceasing prayer and regular fasting, obedience, offering
acceptable sacrifices to God and humility are some of the divinely ordained
ways through which believers can perpetually remain evergreen. The power of God
is readily available to all those who will humbly plug into it through these
methods. It is not enough to merely hear the word; we need to put it to
practice through obedience so that it can avail to us all the spiritual
resources God has in store for us.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving
yourselves.
James 1:22
The worst form of
deception is self-deception. This verse shows that believers can avoid it by
doing what the word commands them. If we want to be fruitful in our relationship
with God and to cause the Lord to be glorified through our lives, we must be
willing to seek His strength and walk in it because our little human strength
is too little to help us overcome the challenges that our physical and
spiritual lives present to us. Are you strong in your walk of faith? Would you
allow the Lord to renew your strength through His word and grace?
Prayer: May we
find the good sense to trust God so that He can renew our strength as long as
we live in Jesus' name!
